What Does $1 of AI Actually Buy You?

AI Wallet

AI companies normally advertise their prices using “tokens,” but what does that actually mean for a normal user? Think of tokens as small pieces of text that an AI reads and writes. If AI models were cars, the token price would be similar to the price of fuel. Today, $1 can buy around 10 million input tokens with GPT-6 Luna, but only 500,000 with GPT-6 Sol, Gemini 3.1 Pro or Grok 4.7, around 250,000 with Claude Opus 5.5, and about 100,000 with the premium GPT-6 Astra. That is a huge difference, but it doesn’t automatically mean Luna is the best deal. A small economical car and a powerful truck use fuel differently because they are designed for different jobs. AI models work in much the same way.

What does $1 of AI buy you?Approximate number of input tokens you can process for $1 at standard API prices.

More tokens for $1 does not necessarily mean better value. Models have different capabilities and may require different amounts of work to complete the same task.

* Gemini 3.1 Pro pricing applies to prompts up to 200k tokens.

This is why looking only at the price per token can be misleading. Imagine two cars: one costs less to fill up but needs twice as much fuel to reach the destination. The cheaper fuel does not necessarily mean the cheaper journey. An advanced AI model might cost more per token but solve a difficult problem with fewer attempts, while a cheaper model may be perfect for thousands of simple tasks. Caching can also reduce the price by letting the AI reuse information it has already processed instead of processing the same information again. For businesses, the question is therefore changing from “Which AI has the cheapest tokens?” to “Which AI can complete my task for the lowest total cost?”
