AI Pricing This Week: Competition Is Moving Beyond Token Prices
AI Wallet
This week showed an important shift in AI pricing. OpenAI and Anthropic introduced new models with lower costs, but the bigger story is that providers are increasingly competing on the total cost of using AI, not only the advertised price per million tokens. OpenAI introduced GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna, while Anthropic launched Claude Opus 5.5 and said typical workloads can cost around 40% less than with Opus 5. Caching and other discounted processing options are also becoming more important.
For users and businesses, AI pricing is becoming more complex. Low-cost models can handle large volumes of simple work, while premium models focus on more difficult tasks. OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and xAI are now competing on price, capability, caching and efficiency. This means the cheapest advertised model may not always result in the lowest total cost.
